Cruising & early potty learning

This past weekend, just 5 days shy of 9 months, Xander took his first cruising steps.
Holding onto to whatever piece of furniture available to him, he is taking steps to get to where he wants to go, instead of getting down on his hands and knees and crawling there.
I don't think he has done it consciously, but subconsciously, his little busy brain has made the connections.
Now we just wait for his body to catch up.
So to whomever who says "you don't let him use a walker, how is he going to learn how to walk?",
I say - well, because I'm not the lazy parent you are, I actually bother taking the time and effort to help him learn without the help of any implements. It involves giving him the freedom to roam and explore and test out his physical capabilities, and playing my role as caregiver to observe and keep him safe while he does so.
Who needs a walker when he's got the safety of mommy's hands to guide him along? ;)

I decided about a week ago that Xander seems ready to start learning how to use the potty.
So we went out and bought the toilet seat ring for him to use on the real toilet bowl.
I'm still not sure if I wanna use the ring only, or whether I might wanna introduce the potty chair so that it might be easier for him to initiate use.
For now, I don't really fancy washing potties, so the toilet bowl it is.

I know that most babies don't start potty training until past 2 years of age.
But I feel that there is no harm in introducing it to Xander now.
As long as there is no pressure on him to actually "perform", I think it'll be good to introduce him to the idea of using the toilet like the rest of us from a young age.
Even if it's just to get him used to the idea of sitting on the potty.
Which is why I use the term "potty learning" instead of potty training.
I like thinking that he's learning about the potty and his bodily functions, rather than being trained like a robot to do something.
Something about the importance of his comfort and awareness level that's crucial to me.
I go into this fully expecting the whole process to take me at least 6 months or more before I can say he has learned to use the potty, and that's ok.
He may surprise me, he may not, so who knows?

Yesterday, he did his first poop on the toilet bowl and boy were we proud!
I don't know if we were proud of him, or of ourselves, but we were positively chuffed :)
I guess proud of ourselves because we managed to interpret his cues and put him on the potty when he was ready to go,
and also of him because he sat there like a champ and didn't even complain about his bum getting stuck in the ring because it is just a tad big for him.
He even gave us his signature grins while sitting there, as if really proud of being such a big boy :)
Or maybe because he just likes not have to sit in his own poop ;)

Tell me those smiles are not to-die-for!

This morning he did it again!
For that to have happened, I had to drag my lazy butt out of bed early enough so that I could put him on the potty before he decided to poop in his diaper.
I am trying really hard to not let my laziness affect his learning and development, as this kid is kicking my butt with his early-to-rise nature.
I blame his daddy for that :p

The milestones are happening at an alarmingly rapid rate now, reminding me daily to cherish every little moment with him.
