Well, we're not really THAT desperate,
but I do desperately want to help my little baby boy with his ongoing discomfort.
See, he's been suffering a little from silent reflux...
not very nice as you can imagine.
So he's been fussy, cranky, uncomfortable, not sleeping well, not feeding well,
but still gaining a ton of weight (go figure eh?).
In a bid to help him feel better and be able to sleep better (hopefully),
I decided that he needs to see a chiropractor.
So we took him yesterday afternoon.
Say what?
Yeah I know.
Radical.
What in the world does a chiropractor do?
No he doesn't trim fingernails for babies (ha-ha).
According to Wikipedia,
Chiropractic is a health care discipline and profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the hypothesis that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system.
Here's a short article about why infants would benefit from chiropractic care: http://www.babyuniverse.com.au/news/baby-articles/why-infants-need-and-benefit-from-chiropractic-care
So ok, back to my point.
Xander baby has been suffering from reflux and gas.
But we are reluctant to medicate him unnecessarily,
and at the same time, we want to help him feel better.
Plus, that might mean better sleep and a saved sanity for me :)
So I've been doing my research whenever I could find time,
and the common consensus was getting reflux medication for babies like prevacid or zantac.
That didn't satisfy me because that would merely relieve the symptoms and not solve the root of the problem for my little boy.
So I kept looking and found that many babies who have the same problems have benefited from chiropractic adjustments and care.
After much reading, I realised that it all made so much sense.
He's been through trauma in the birth process,
so I have no doubt that he probably has parts of his spine that's out of alignment.
He'll either grow out or grow into that misalignment,
but who knows for sure?
Even if he does grow out of it, how long would it take?
So we decided to bring him in to be looked at.
So here's the deal.
We've been noticing that he favours his right side,
as in he would always face his right side when he's sleeping and such.
That has resulted in a slight flat spot on the right side of his head, towards to back.
Now he's head's a little misshapen, and that pisses me off.
The chiropractor (let's call him the Chiro) found that he has a kink/misalignment on his atlas (the piece of bone right under the skull that supports the head on the spine) on that right side,
which has likely caused this problem.
Probably because he was stuck in that position for a pretty long time from the time he engaged himself in my pelvis to the time he was finally born via vacuum suction.
He fixed that (cue crazy screams), so hopefully Xander baby would now feel comfortable with both sides and the flat spot would even itself out over time.
*fingers crossed*
Then,
we've also noticed that he arches his back pretty hard sometimes,
whether it be during feeding,
when we're carrying him,
or when he's lying in bed he would flex his torso to lift his entire butt up.
He seemed really uncomfortable.
Chiro found a badly connected sacram in his lower left back,
which is the large triangular shaped bone at the base of his spine and is inserted like a wedge between the 2 hip bones.
So he fixed that too (cue more crazy screams).
Fingers crossed that it works...
Chiro also explained that because nerves run through the spinal column
and these nerves control every other function in our bodies,
misaligned portions can cause the nerves to misfire,
causing problems with reflux, gassiness, colic, etc.
That was our ah-ha moment and all we needed to hear to know we're making the right decision for our little one.
I really hope so.
We go back again next Monday evening for a follow up,
but in the meantime,
the poor little boy is feeling a little bit sore in those spots after the adjustments so we've just gotta comfort Mister Cranky-Butt for the next couple of days.
My poor arms.
He's getting so darn heavy now!
So there you go little one,
your first chiropractic visit.
How cool?
:p
